Kesh Paricharya - Ideal Ayurvedic Hair Care Ritual

Kesh Paricharya - Ideal Ayurvedic Hair Care Ritual

Ayurveda offers a wide range of herbs for al your haircare needs, whether it is detox, nourishment or prevention. The sanskrit word “kesh” means “the one that rules the head” and paricharya signifies “taking care”. Thus, kesh paricharya refers to the haircare regimen in Ayurveda. Ayurvedic haircare is a well-developed ancient science that preserves the hair and treats hair disorders naturally.

Here is a comprehensive Ayurvedic hair care routine for naturally healthy hair.

Ayurvedic Hair Care Routine

Step 1- Discover your Ayurvedic Hair Type

The most vital haircare step is to know your hair type. According to Ayurveda, our body functions are governed by the three vital energies Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each person is composed of these Tridosha, with one or two doshas predominating the system. This determines the kind and health of your air to a large extent. You can discover your hair type with the help of the Ayurvedic quiz (link).

Step 2 - Hair Oiling

Ayurveda recommends generous and frequent oiling of the hair with a herb-infused oil comprised of a specific combination of herbs. This hair oil is beneficial for multiple reasons. It supports the sebaceous glands, and nourishes the scalp and hair roots.

Oiling the hair is crucial for excellent hair health. Regular oiling protects the hair from dryness, premature greying or clogging of the scalp glands.

Ayurveda indicates the presence of multiple vital points or Marmas on your scalp. Hence, oiling your scalp and hair is the rejuvenating method for removing any excess or severe doshas generated in your head and to activate these vital points.

A regular scalp and hair massage with dosha-specific Ayurvedic oils promotes the growth of healthy, strong, and glossy hair due to the herbs' nourishing, root-strengthening, and conditioning characteristics.

Ayurveda suggests oiling your hair every day if convenient. You can also adjust your oiling frequency based on your hair type. Pitta and Kapha hair types can be oiled less frequently than Vata hair types, which require more frequent oiling.

It is important that you should not keep the oil sitting on your head overnight. This is why you must oil your hair 2-3 hours before washing them. This duration helps the scalp and hair roots to absorb the adequate nutrition from the oil.

Besides, the hair oil also protects the hair from excess dryness during the wash.

For the vata hair, you can use Elixr Hair Oil - Vata

For the pitta hair, you can use Elixr Hair Oil - Pitta

For the kapha hair, you can use Elixr Hair Oil - Kapha

If you have mixed body type you are confused about your exact constitution, you can use Elixr Hair Oil - Tridoshic

Step 3 - Hair Wash and Conditioning

The scalp follicles become blocked with undesired accumulations of excess oils, filth, and grime. It is imperative to remove by washing your hair regularly using chemical free Ayurvedic Hair wash blend.

If you travel or spend a lot of time outdoors, you may want to wash your hair every day, to ensure that your scalp is clean and healthy. With the natural goodness of Reetha, Shikakai and Hibiscus, Ayurvedic Hair wash blend brings goodness with each wash and prevent dryness and damage to hair.

For a combined cleansing and conditioning benefit, use Conditioning Hair wash every day. It contains mild potassium soaps made from organic oils of Coconut, Sunflower and Castor. Hence, Conditioning Hair wash deep cleanses and conditions your hair, but never create dryness in the scalp or the hair roots.

Step 4 - Detangling and Nourishing

The oil secretion from the scalp pores throughout the day, coupled with the debris of dead cells and dirt can make your hair look clumpy and tangled.

To maintain a natural untangled look, use Detangling and Nourishing Hair Serum. It helps to detangle the hair naturally with lemon, and tulsi. At the same time, it brings the natural nourishment of hibiscus, and beetroot.

Step 2 - Hair Mask

Whether your scalp is able to absorb the nourishing hair oil or not, depends on the cleanliness, flexibility, and health of the scalp pores. If these pores are rigid and clogged, they may fail to ensure proper heat exchange, and causes dirt buildup.

This is why Ayurvedic Hair Lepa or Mask is a crucial component of Ayurvedic haircare regimen. It removes the dead cells and debris and ensures a deeper cleansing of the metabolic channels. As a result, your hair roots receive better circulation and nutritional supply.

For extra conditioning benefits, use Conditioning Hair MAsk. With the natural conditioning benefits of Bhringraj, amla and brahmi, Conditioning Hair MAsk is especially effective for oily scalp or thin hair.

If you are suffering from dryness in hair, low hair growth or rapid hairfall, use Volumiser hair Mask. Volumiser hair Mask brings you the intense nutrition from Ashwagandha and Jatamansi, that makes hair strong and promotes hair growth.

Step 3 - Hair Wash

Use the traditional Hair wash blend at least once a week for deeper cleansing. Ayurveda recommends using choornam or herbal powders for the best cleansing effect. Hair wash bland contains the natural cleansing properties of Shikakai and Soapnut.

Apart from these, you can use following single herbs for -

  1. Low hair growth/ rapid hair fall - tea made of Amla powder/ Forever Young tea Blend
  2. Early greying - tea made of Hibiscus powder
  3. Excessive oiliness in scalp - Regular wash with soapnut/Shikakai powder

Unhealthy hair is a reflection of your bad diet and lifestyle

According to Ayurveda, the hair is a byproduct of the bone tissue, as are the nails and teeth, making all of these tissues intimately connected. The hair is also linked to the nervous system and the gut, so if the health of any of these tissues deteriorates, the hair is likely to be affected. Your hair reflects your body consitution and hence its best start with determining your dosha. Understanding your dosha reveals how to keep yourself in balance to stay happy, healthy and disease free.
